Just when autumn chills the air
and gardens grow brittle and brown
and children squirm in school
and we buy calendars for the new year
and we get closer to middle age or whatever age we never thought we’d be,
Homecoming happens and we’re 20 again
and the oaks still stand, majestic
and the parade looks sweet and foolish
and we cheer a little for the team and talk a lot with our friends,
and the warmth of remembering college days
makes the chill of autumn a relief, a familiar recess,
a cool we welcome because we’re 20 again.
